Most historians and musicians believe that the Tabla evolved from the Pakhawaj, a traditional barrel-shaped drum used in classical music and temple performances. The transformation from Pakhawaj to Tabla is often credited to Ustad Siddhar Khan Dhadi of the Dhadi Samaj from Punjab, who is considered the founder of the modern Tabla.
Through his innovation, the single-headed Pakhawaj was divided into two separate drums — the Dayan (right drum) and the Bayan (left drum) — giving birth to the beautiful twin-drum instrument we know today. This development not only revolutionized rhythm in Indian classical music but also laid the foundation for generations of Tabla players.
